One moment, Emmie is writing her high school history paper; the next, she’s sitting with a gorgeous 16th century king who vacillates from kissing her to ordering her execution.

Able to travel back to her own time, but intensely drawn to King Nick and the mysterious death of his sister, Emmie finds herself solving the murder of a young princess and unraveling court secrets while trying to keep her head on her shoulders, literally.

With everything to lose, Emmie finds herself facing her biggest battle of all: How to cheat the path of history and keep her irresistible king, or lose him–and her heart–forever.

I am currently going through a major Historical Romance kick after binge-watching The White Queen on Stan (which is based on the novels of the same name by Phillipa Gregory). In high school, we never covered the War of the Roses or any of the English Monarchy so this has all been very new information for me. When I was introduced to Emmie and the Tudor King I went in with very little knowledge of the 16th Century which didn’t matter because the book took me gently by the hand and wooed me with its whispers of balls, corsets, and court intrigued.

From the begining of the novel we meet Emmie, a modern day teenager with a sharp mind and a passion for jewellry making. Without spoiling too much of the plot, Emmie discovers a way to travel back in time where she meets the fictional King Nick who is originally set on a path of destruction after the murder of his beloved little sister.

I fell hard for Natalie Murray’s luxurious writing and attention to detail. As the story continued to twist and turn, I was swept away into a world where it was easy to imagine how a time traveler might stumble their way through the sixteenth century, trying desperately not to be hung for witchcraft with their 21stcentury knowledge of medicine and technology.

The assorted characters from both the past and future were intriguing and fun, with the plot captivating my attention enough to force me to stay up all night reading. (Who needs sleep? I NEED answers!) If you enjoy Historical Romance novels, time travel and the TV show Reign then you are going to need to add this book to your TBR list immediately.
